    A Kolmogorov theorem for nearly-integrable Poisson systems with asymptotically decaying time-dependent perturbation

    The aim of this paper is to prove the Kolmogorov theorem of persistence of Diophantine flows for nearly-integrable Poisson systems associated to a real analytic Hamiltonian with aperiodic time dependence, provided that the perturbation is asymptotically vanishing. The paper is an extension of an analogous result by the same authors for canonical Hamiltonian systems; the flexibility of the Lie series method developed by A. Giorgilli et al., is profitably used in the present generalisation.Comment: 10 page

    Circular economy and corporate social responsibility in the agricultural system: Cases study of the Italian agri-food industry

    The persistent exploitation of natural resources and the consequent use of consumption are driving global food demand with the result that agricultural activity is becoming less and less environmentally friendly. The circular economy (CE) can become a valid alternative, inserting the economic-agricultural system into the harmonic process of material circulation. The corporate social responsibility (CSR) model is particularly interesting not only because of the ethical dimension of the company but also as a factor of strategic business improvement that combines the concepts of CSR and CE as possible solutions for developing sustainable business processes. The objective of the work is to highlight a detailed framework of how the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the Italian agri-food industry can provide an ade-quate level of communication, circular strategies and social responsibility practices. The research methodology is based on a qualitative multiple study conducted on a sample of nine companies in the Italian territory. The study highlights the attention of companies on the issues of the CE for the achievement of the set sustainable objectives and the attention to CSR and CE practices. The work has several implications. It provides a further understanding of CSR and CE policies as enabling factors for the development of sustainable organizational performance in agriculture. Moreover, it better investigates the relationship between CSR and the CE. Finally, it analyses the SMEs state of the art in the CE field and strengthens the concept of CE by analysing corporate practices consistent with sustainability reports

    Intracranial dermoid cysts: variations of radiological and clinical features

    Background: Intracranial dermoid cysts are uncommon, and their clinical features as well as surgical management differ from patient to patient. Dermoids are generally benign lesions, but may cause spontaneous complications such as meningitis and/or hydrocephalus due to rupture and epileptic seizures depending on their location. Little has been reported about characteristic imaging findings with resulting therapeutic considerations, and only a few reports exist about associated hydrocephalus. Imaging modalities have changed and can facilitate differential diagnosis and follow-up if applied correctly. In this paper, we attempt to contribute our clinical experience with the management of dermoid cysts. Patients and methods: The charts of five men and two women with intracranial dermoid cysts were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were treated between September 1993 and September 2006. Selected patients are presented in detail. Results: Tumour location, size and radiographic characteristics varied in each patient. Clinical presentations comprised focal neurological deficits as well as epileptic seizures, persistent headache, mental changes and psycho-organic syndromes. One patient underwent delayed ventriculo-peritoneal shunting after ruptured fatty particles caused obstructive hydrocephalus. Despite dermoid rupture into the subarachnoid space, three patients never developed hydrocephalus. Diffuse vascular supra-tentorial lesions were seen in one patient as a result of aseptic meningitis. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) hyperintensity in dermoids is related to decrease of water proton diffusion and should be used for both the diagnosis and follow-up of this lesion. Conclusion: Although dermoid cysts are known to be benign entities per se, their rupture can cause a wide range of symptoms including aseptic meningitis and/or hydrocephalus. This may be due to intraventricular obstruction and/or paraventricular compression. While rupture does not necessarily bring about hydrocephalus, radical removal of the tumour and close monitoring of ventricular size is required.     The aim of this paper is to prove a Kolmogorov-type result for a nearly-integrable Hamiltonian, quadratic in the actions, with an aperiodic time dependence. The existence of a torus with a prefixed Diophantine frequency is shown in the forced system, provided that the perturbation is real-analytic and (exponentially) decaying with time. The advantage consists of the possibility to choose an arbitrarily small decaying coefficient, consistently with the perturbation size.Comment: Several corrections in the proof with respect to the previous version.     In vitro and in vivo gene transfer to pulmonary cells mediated by cationic liposomes

    Cationic liposomes have been proposed as alternative to adenovirus in the treatment of cystic fibrosis lung disease. Therefore, we have investigated the efficiency of two lipid mixtures in mediating gene transfer in in vitro and in vivo models. The cationic lipid DOTMA (N-(1-(2,3(dioleyloxy)propyl)-n,n,n-trimethylammoniumchloride) and DOGS (dioctadecylamidoglycylspermine) were used in combination with the neutral lipid DOPE (dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine). The relative transfection efficiencies of the two cationic liposomes were tested using the bacterial β-galactosidase (lacZ) and the firefly luciferase genes. Gene expression was detected in both cell lines and primary culture of rhesus monkey airway epithelium after transfection with plasmid DNA complexed with DOGS/DOPE or DOTMA/DOPE. Transfection efficiency of both types of lipids was higher in the mouse fibroblast 3T3 cell line as compared to human carcinoma A549 cells and primary epithelial cultures. Administration of DNA-liposome complexes via intratracheal instillation resulted in expression of the lacZ and luciferase marker gene in the mouse airways. In vivo transfection mediated by both types of liposomes were proven to be far less efficient than adenovirus treatment

    Microstructure, mechanical, and thermogravimetric characterization of cellulosic by-products obtained from biomass seeds

    The microstructural, thermal, and nanomechanical characterization of biomass by-products coming from the food industry were studied. Scanning electron microscopy showed a microstructure formed by polygonal grains. The thermal behavior of seeds, evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, revealed three main components (hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin). Walnut shell showed the highest thermal stability and also the highest amount of lignin. The nanomechanical aspects were evaluated by nanoindentation. Samples with higher amount of cellulose presented minor modulus values. In accordance with the thermal stability, the highest modulus and hardness were observed in walnut.
